The International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IIMCB) is located at the Ochota Campus in Warsaw, the largest campus for biomedical sciences in the Central and Eastern Europe. It was created by the parliamentary bill based on the agreement between UNESCO and Polish Government signed in 1995. It was found with the ambitious idea to create a unique, innovative, based on world standards, research centre with high quality research, best possible conditions for ambitious, motivated group leaders and their staff, implementation of modern biotechnology, as well as education and popularization of molecular medicine and human genetics.
International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology started its activity in 1999, employs over 100 people and has currently 10 laboratories: Department of Molecular Biology (Żylicz), Laboratory of Bioinformatics and Protein Engineering (Bujnicki), Laboratory of Structural Biology MPG/PAN (Bochtler), Laboratory of Neurodegeneration (Kuźnicki), Laboratory of Biomodelling (Filipek), Laboratory of Cell Biology (Miączyńska), Laboratory of Molecular and Cellular Neurobiology (Jaworski), Laboratory of Protein Structure (Nowotny), Laboratory of Mitochondrial Biogenesis (Chacinska) and Laboratory of Cell Cortex Mechanics MPG/PAN in Dresden (Paluch).
From 2000 there were more than 360 publications from the Institute in journals such as Nature, JBC, EMBO J, Blood, Cancer, FASEB J, Gene, Proteins, PNAS USA, Bioinformatics, BMC Bioinformatics, and other. The 6th floor building of the Institute offers 16820 m3 of cubic space, with 4032 m2 of internal surface. The infrastructure of the Institute is fully adapted to the safety and biosafety regulations for chemistry and molecular biology laboratories. All laboratories have been equipped with modern apparatus in accordance with the highest international standards. In addition to the regular equipment in each wet laboratory, there are pieces of apparatus shared by all researchers. There are centrifuges and ultracentrifuges, sets of FPLC and HPLC systems, chromatography system ACTA, a real-time thermocycler, fluorescence microscopes, phosphoimagers, incubators and shakers for bacterial cultures, electroporators for transfections and transformations, freezers (-700C). Among new pieces of equipment are: surface plasmon resonance measuring system Biacore 3000, confocal microscope, flow cytometer, CD spectropolarimeter, microplate reader, microcalorymeter, FACS. There are also seven cell culture labs fully equipped with incubators, laminar-flow hoods, and microscopes, three coldrooms, and two sets of water deionizing units. The isotope laboratory is equipped with a phosphofluoroimager and a scintillation counter compliant with the Polish and EU law regulations. The Laboratory of Structural Biology, fully financed by the Max Planck Society, Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics in Dresden, is furnished with the most modern protein crystallography equipment including a high brilliance rotating anode generator (RU-H3RHB from MSC), Max-Flux confocal optical mirrors, a MAR345 low noise X-ray detector and a cryosystem. Three lecture halls allow for intensive seminar programs, without any restrictions concerning time schedules. The practical courses are organized in a separate laboratory that is an important element for comfort and work safety. Being part of a large building complex, IIMCB has access to the following: six lecture halls (from 20 to 300 people), an exhibition hall, a hotel, a cafeteria, as well as other facilities belonging to the neighboring research institutes of the Ochota Campus. The IIMCB facilities, as well as the whole campus complex, are fully accessible for the disabled. Medical, social and legal services are accessible to the entire staff on-site. A security guard system operates on the entire campus round the clock.
