Founded in 1652, Leopoldina is the oldest scientific society bringing together researchers in the fields of natural sciences and medicine in Germany. In 2008 it was transformed into the German Academy of Sciences. Elected academy members are outstanding scholars from around the world. Currently it has about 1,300 members - 75 percent of them are researchers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, 25 percent - scientists from 30 other countries. Maciej Żylicz has also been elected a member of the Senate of the Max Planck Society - an independent non-profit institution supporting scientific research in Germany.
