During the visit Prof. Jacek Kuźnicki, IIMCB Director gave a presentation about the Institute and research conducted under the FishMed project. The guests visited Zebrafish Core Facility, Laboratory of Mitochondrial Biogenesis and the newly created Laboratory of Zebrafish Developmental Genomics, Max Planck/IIMCB Research Group. During the meeting Lightsheet Z.1, state-of-the-art fluorescence microscope was presented.
Visit from German science journalists
On June 2, 2014 IIMCB was visited by the members of the German Science Journalists’ Association WPK (Wissenschafts-Pressekonferenz). The guests were hosted by Prof. Jacek Kuźnicki, IIMCB Director. Prof. Kuźnicki gave a presentation about the Institute. Afterwards, German journalists met with Dr. Agnieszka Choluj, Head of the Centre for Innovative Bioscience Education and Hubert Ludwiczak, representative of the Technology Transfer Centre BioTech-IP.
11 members of the German Science Journalists’ Association visited IIMCB as part of their research visit to Poland. WPK was founded in Bonn in 1986. It is a registered association with non-profit status, based in Bonn. Their mission is to promote quality science journalism. They run seminars, off-the-record discussions, research tours and continuing education workshops for our members. In the public arena they organise debates to drive the dialogue between scientists, policy makers and society.
Visit from Talented Youth
On March 3, 2014 International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology was visited by Talented Youth. During the visit guests heard a presentation by Dr. Urszula Wyrzykowska concerning objectives of the FishMed project, then Michał Bazała gave a speech entitled ”Small fish, big hopes”, which was focused on zebrafish. Our young guests participated in group activities during which they for example worked with FishMed web page. They also visited the Zebrafish Core Facility. After the workshops, Prof. Jacek Kuźnicki, IIMCB Director met with young people and gave a presentation about the functioning of the Institute.
Visit from Martin Dahinden - Director of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation
On December 7, 2012 Martin Dahinden - Director of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation visited with delegation the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology, Beneficiary of PSRP. During the visit, the guests learned about the project implemented by the IIMCB entitled “The role of the gene Tsg101 (tumor susceptibility gene 101) in the regulation of transcription in health and disease” (PSPB-094/2010) and visited the newly formed Zebrafish Core Facility.
Visit of Prof. Thomas Braun and Prof. Klaus Hahlbrock from the Max Planck Society
On Dec. 2, 2010 IIMCB was visited by representatives of the Max Planck Society, Prof. Klaus Hahlbrock, a former Vice-president of MPS, member of IIMCB International Advisory Board, and Prof. Thomas Braun, Director of the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research in Bad Nauheim. Prof. Braun presented his Institute, emphasizing its status of an institution still being created and developed. Both visitors met with Directors of IIMCB, Prof. Kuznicki and Prof. Witt, and with all Lab Leaders; next they met individually with each of Lab Leaders. The visit was concluded with a highlight of possible platforms of future cooperation of both institutes.
Visit of a delegation of German Cancer Research Center and the Helmholtz Association
On March 26, 2009 a delegation of German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) and the Helmholtz Association with Prof. Otmar Wiestler visited IIMCB. Prof. Wiestler is the Chairman of the Management Board and Scientific Director of DKFZ and the Vice-President for Health Research of the Helmholtz Association. The delegation was hosted by Prof. Michal Witt and discussion focused on possibilities of future cooperation of IIMCB with both institutions.
Visit to NIH
On November 20, 2008, Prof. Jacek Kuznicki gave a presentation at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. His talk was focused on IIMCB and other Ochota Campus institutes presenting them as excellent places for young, talented scientists, who want to develop their career. His visit was organised by the Polish Embassy, the Fogarty Foundation, NIH and European Commission.
Visit of Prof. Tim Hunt, Nobel Prize Laureate
On Nov. 6, 2008 IIMCB was visited by Prof. Tim Hunt, who received the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 2001 for discovery of cyclins. Hunt found that cyclins begin to be synthesised after the sea urchin’s eggs are fertilized and increase in levels during interphase, until they drop very quickly in the middle of mitosis in each cell division. He also found that cyclins are present in vertebrate cells where they also regulate the cell cycle. He and others subsequently showed that the cyclins bind and activate a family of protein kinases, now called the cyclin-dependent kinases. Hunt shared the prize with Leland Hartwell and Paul Nurse. Prof. Hunt delivered a lecture „Getting in and out of mitosis" during the meeting of recipients of the Foundation for Polish Science award.
President of the Max Planck Society visited IIMCB
On November 4, 2008, Prof. Peter Gruss, President of the Max Planck Society was visiting our Institute. The delegation of: Prof. P. Gruss, Prof. K. Hahlbrock, Dr. Sabine Zimmermann and Mrs Kristina Schmucker were hosted by Prof. Jacek Kuznicki, Director of IIMCB. During the meeting achievements of the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology were presented and development of joint IIMCB – MPS venture was discussed.
