Professor Andrzej Dziembowski Joins RNA Society Board of Directors
Prof. Andrzej Dziembowski has been elected to the RNA Society’s Board of Directors for the 2025–2026 term. He will contribute to shaping the programming of this international non-profit organization of over 2,500 members, which is dedicated to promoting research and education in RNA science across the globe.
Born in 1974, Prof. Dziembowski is a molecular biologist, biochemist, and geneticist affiliated with the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology in Warsaw, where he leads the Laboratory of RNA Biology – ERA Chairs Group. He earned his undergraduate degree and doctorate from the Faculty of Biology at the University of Warsaw, where he continues to lecture. He also spent several years at the CNRS Molecular Genetics Centre in Gif-sur-Yvette, France, before leading an independent lab at the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. Prof. Dziembowski has authored numerous scientific articles published in prestigious journals, including Nature, Cell, Nature Structural and Molecular Biology, Nature Communications, Genes and Development, Molecular Cell, EMBO Journal, and EMBO Reports.
Among various contributions, Prof. Dziembowski’s research has unveiled a new family of poly(A) polymerases, TENT5, and outlined the role of uridylation in restricting retrotransposons. The current research mainly focuses on the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in metazoa, utilizing transgenic animal models, transcriptomic methods, and biochemical experiments. Recently, Prof. Dziembowski’s interest has shifted towards mRNA therapeutics, underpinned by an ERC Advanced Grant to investigate the in vivo metabolism of synthetic mRNA molecules. He has been also developing methods to study mRNA poly(A) tails via Direct RNA Sequencing.
In collaboration with Prof. Gracjan Michlewski from IIMCB, another RNA Society member, Prof. Dziembowski co-organized the Polish RNA Meeting, which attracted over 200 RNA researchers from Poland and abroad.
About the RNA Society
The RNA Society is an international non-profit organization dedicated to promoting research and education in RNA science. With over 2,500 members, the Society organizes an annual scientific conference, publishes the peer-reviewed journal RNA, and supports RNA-related research through programming and networking opportunities.
Prof. Andrzej Dziembowski will serve on the Board of Directors alongside Tsutomu Suzuki from the University of Tokyo, Neva Caliskan from the University of Regensburg, Aaron Hoskins from the University of Wisconsin - Madison, Marina Chekulaeva from the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) in Berlin and Olivia S. Rissland from the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics and the RNA Biosciences Initiative at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
