PROF A. DZIEMBOWSKI of IIMCB

Prof. Andrzej Dziembowski of IIMCB has been appointed a Founding Member of the FEBS Research Academy, a new body bringing together leading researchers in biochemistry and molecular biology from around the world.

The FEBS Research Academy was established by the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS), one of Europe’s largest organizations representing life scientists. Its 100 Founding Members come from 24 countries and include 28 Nobel Prize laureates. Prof. Agnieszka Chacińska of IMol, Polish Academy of Sciences, has also been appointed to the Academy.

The Founding Members include three current members of IIMCB’s International Advisory Board: Prof. Magdalena Żernicka-Goetz, , affiliated with the University of Cambridge and the California Institute of Technology; Prof. Eric Westhof of the University of Strasbourg; and Prof. Susan M. Gasser of the Foundation of the Swiss Institute for Experimental Cancer Research in Lausanne. Two former Board members and Nobel Prize laureates have also been appointed: Prof. Aaron Ciechanover of the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology and Prof. Robert Huber of the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsried.

“It is a great honor for me to be among the Founding Members of the FEBS Research Academy, especially as more than a quarter of them are Nobel laureates. I hope the Academy will become an effective platform for supporting Polish biochemistry and molecular biology, increasing the international visibility of our research and creating new opportunities for collaboration,” says Prof. Dziembowski.

The FEBS Research Academy aims to advance research and innovation, foster international and interdisciplinary collaboration, and support the next generation of scientists. It will also seek to strengthen the voice of the scientific community on issues of societal importance.

Prof. Andrzej Dziembowski heads the Laboratory of RNA Biology – ERA Chairs Group at IIMCB. His team investigates the mechanisms of RNA metabolism, with a particular focus on the regulation of mRNA stability and its role in gene expression and cellular function. The researchers are also exploring how to apply this knowledge to develop therapeutic mRNAs.
