Dr. Lidia Wróbel, Head of the Laboratory of Cellular Proteostasis at the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology in Warsaw (IIMCB), has been awarded the prestigious EMBO Installation Grant by the European Molecular Biology Organization. The grant will support advanced research into the underlying causes of neurodegenerative diseases.

Dr. Wróbel received funding for her research project titled “Spatial organisation of protein quality control in neurodegenerative diseases.” Her team will focus on protein quality control pathways in the cell nucleus and the mechanisms of nucleocytoplasmic transport, leveraging cutting-edge genetic manipulation methods such as CRISPR/Cas.

“The EMBO grant is not only a valuable source of financial support. I am delighted to join the EMBO community of young researchers, which provides opportunities for professional growth, collaboration, and attracting top scientists to work in the lab,” said Dr. Wróbel. “With this fellowship, our research can shed new light on the mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases and offer new therapeutic possibilities,” emphasized the Polish scientist.

The EMBO Installation Grants aim to encourage young scientists to establish their own laboratories, enhance international collaboration within European research institutions, and foster academic mobility. One of the application requirements is a minimum of two years of scientific work abroad. Recipients receive €50,000 annually for five years, along with access to a broad network of collaborations, mentoring, and training courses.

“We are delighted to welcome the new EMBO Installation Grantees to our vibrant community and wish them every success in their careers,” said Fiona Watt, Director of EMBO.

This year, ten researchers were awarded EMBO Installation Grants, including three from Poland. Additionally, laboratories in the Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Lithuania, Portugal, and Turkey will receive funding. Research areas span aging, cancer biology, gut-brain axis communication, microbiota, and gene-editing tools.

About EMBO

The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) is one of the most prominent organizations in the scientific world, promoting excellence in life sciences by supporting researchers throughout their careers. EMBO offers grant programs, organizes numerous courses and training sessions, and integrates the scientific community across Europe. One of its flagship initiatives is the EMBO Installation Grants program, which provides support for scientists establishing independent laboratories. Recipients of these grants also join the EMBO Young Investigator Network, gaining access to training and resources from EMBO-associated institutions.
