Prof. Marta Miączyńska appointed Chair of the EMBO Council
Marta Miączyńska, Director of the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology in Warsaw (IIMCB), has assumed the position of Chair of the Council of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO).
EMBO is one of the most widely recognized international organizations promoting scientific cooperation in the life sciences and supporting researchers at all stages of their careers. The organization awards prestigious fellowships and research grants and publishes highly ranked scientific journals.
Marta Miączyńska will lead the EMBO Council together with Vice Chair Ivan Đikić, Director of the Institute for Biochemistry II at Goethe University Frankfurt. They will work closely with Fiona Watt, Director of EMBO, as well as Paul Nurse, EMBO Secretary General, President of the Royal Society of London and former Director of the Francis Crick Institute in London. The EMBO Council is a primary oversight body of the organization. The Chair and Vice-Chair positions are elected annually by Council.
“EMBO has a special role in advancing the global life sciences community,” Fiona Watt said. “Election as Council Chair is both a significant honor and a great responsibility. We are delighted to welcome Marta as Chair role following her excellent work as vice-chair from 2024 to 2025 and as Council member since 2021.”

“I am honored to take on the position of Chair of the Council of the European Molecular Biology Organization. EMBO plays an important role in bringing together the European and global scientific community in the life sciences. I am committed to supporting research excellence, development of scientific careers, and the highest standards of integrity and responsibility in research across Europe,” said Marta Miączyńska.
Marta Miączyńska has been a member of EMBO since 2017. From May 2024, she held the position of Vice Chair of the EMBO Council. At the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology in Warsaw, she serves as Director and heads the Laboratory of Cell Biology.
Since the beginning of 2026, Marta Miączyńska has also held the position of Chair of EU-LIFE, a European consortium of independent research institutes active in the life sciences. Both appointments, which coincided at the start of this year, highlight her active role in shaping scientific policy, collaboration and research standards at the European level.
