The heat wave in Poland seems to have no end in sight. All the more reason to read the new publication under GRIEG grant that looks at how animals transform cellular programs to survive the cold.

We recommend reading a publication that was created by Rafał Ciosk (University of Oslo) and Wojciech Pokrzywa (IIMCB) groups as part of a GRIEG grant. It deals with how animals rewire cellular programs to survive cold. It is a fascinating problem with potential biomedical implications, ranging from emergency medicine to space travel. The authors of the publication finally show that mimicking the effects of FTN-1/FTH1 with drugs protects neurons from cold-induced degeneration, opening a potential avenue to improved treatments of hypothermia.
