Dr Wojciech Galej is a structural biologist specializing in RNA–protein complexes. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of pre-mRNA splicing, including the structure and function of large macromolecular machines involved in RNA processing. By combining cryo-electron microscopy with biochemical, biophysical, and cell biology approaches, his work contributes to understanding fundamental processes of gene expression relevant to human health.

At IIMCB, Dr Galej will lead the Laboratory of RNA Splicing, strengthening the Institute’s research capacity in RNA and structural biology. His expertise also aligns with IIMCB’s strategic focus on RNA and cell biology and with the Institute’s development of advanced research infrastructure, including cryo-electron microscopy.

Dr Galej will also implement his ERC Consolidator Grant project at IIMCB. The project, SPRING — SPlicing Regulation In context: Next-Generation mechanistic studies — investigates how splicing is carried out and regulated in the cellular context, using advanced structural biology approaches, including cryo-electron microscopy, in situ cryo-electron tomography and AI-based modelling.

Dr Galej is currently a group leader at EMBL and a structural biologist specializing in RNA–protein complexes and the molecular mechanisms of pre-mRNA splicing. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of pre-mRNA splicing, including the structure and function of large macromolecular machines involved in RNA processing.

“It is a pleasure to welcome the new EMBO Members and Associate Members. Their election celebrates their achievements and creativity. By contributing their unique perspectives and experiences, they will greatly strengthen the network of leading life scientists who are shaping the field,” said EMBO Director Fiona Watt in the official EMBO press release.

EMBO elected 71 leading life scientists from 23 countries to the EMBO Membership this year, including 60 new Members from EMBC Member States and 11 Associate Members from outside Europe. EMBO Members contribute to the organization’s activities, help shape the development of the life sciences, and strengthen research communities in Europe and beyond.

The election also strengthens IIMCB’s position in the EMBO community. There are currently 20 EMBO Members in Poland, including five affiliated with IIMCB.
