Today, the ceremonial launch of Prof. Andrzej Dziembowski and Dr. Wojciech Pokrzywa’s GRIEG projects, co-financed by Norway Grants, took place at the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology in Warsaw (IIMCB). Among the guests, there were Directors of the IIMCB and a representative of the National Science Center (NCN; NCN is in charge of the Basic Research Program under which GRIEG projects are financed).
The launching participants were welcomed by prof. Jacek Jaworski who gave a short presentation titled "Polish-Norwegian cooperation at the IIMCB". The next speaker was a special guest of the meeting, Dr. Marzena Oliwkiewicz-Miklasińska, Head of EEA and Norway Grants Team, a representative of the NCN, who introduced the principles and mechanisms of the Norwegian Funds. Subsequent speeches belonged to prof. A. Dziembowski and W. Pokrzywa.
During the presentation, prof. Dziembowski, together with the project partners, described his plans and expectations related to their project entitled "The role of cytoplasmic polyadenylation in the regulation of local translation in neurons" and talked about the chances of understanding the molecular mechanisms that regulate the process of synaptic translation and his plans for a closer study of the cytoplasmic polyadenylation process.
Whereas, Dr. Wojciech Pokrzywa introduced the participants to the project "Cellular Adaptation to Cold" which he provides together with his partners from the University of Oslo. The main aim of their project is to study a process of cellular adaptation to cold temperatures and researchers are going to focus on mechanisms altering the abundance and types of cellular messenger RNAs and proteins, as these kinds of molecules are critical for the live-or-die decision of the cell.
