Jacek Jaworski elected as EMBO member
Prof. Jacek Jaworski, Head of the Laboratory of Molecular and Cellular Neurobiology, has been elected as a member of the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO) in recognition for his contribution to discovery of the key role of mTOR in neuronal development. Prof. Jaworski is one of 69 outstanding life scientists elected to the EMBO membership, joining a group of more than 2000 of the best researchers in Europe and around the world. This year, he is the only Pole elected.
Fiona Watt, EMBO Director said: “These remarkable scientists have unravelled molecular secrets of life, deepened our understanding of health and disease, and are paving the way for further discoveries and innovations. Their achievements reinforce the critical role that life science research plays in the lives of citizens across Europe and the world.”
The goal of the team led by Prof. Jaworski is to understand the cellular mechanisms responsible for the development, stability and plasticity of neuronal morphology, which is the physical scaffold for higher brain processes. In particular, their research focuses on the protein kinase mTOR. Understanding the contribution of mTOR to the above processes will likely shed light on the human diseases known as mTORopathies, which manifest in brain tumors, epilepsy, and neuropsychiatric problems.
EMBO is an organization that promotes excellence in the life sciences in Europe and beyond. The goals of the organization are to support talented researchers at all stages of their careers, stimulate the exchange of scientific information, and help build a research environment where scientists can achieve their best work.
New members are nominated and elected by the existing EMBO Membership. Among all EMBO members are 17 Poles, five of whom are currently working at IIMCB (Janusz Bujnicki, Andrzej Dziembowski, Jacek Jaworski, Marta Miączyńska, Marcin Nowotny). EMBO will formally welcome the new members at the annual Members’ Meeting in Heidelberg, Germany, between 25-27 October 2023.
