New development perspectives for the IIMCB – National Recovery Plan will finance the expansion of core facilities
The International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology in Warsaw (IIMCB) has secured PLN 71.7 million from the National Recovery Plan under the "Molecular and Cell Research Infrastructure" project. The funds will enable the Institute to supply its existing core facilities with the state-of-the-art research equipment and to establish new units offering innovative services on a national and European scale.
For many years, the Institute has provided comprehensive research services, including the use of specialized equipment, standardized procedures and proven materials, as well as expert advice. Many of these services are unique in the Polish R&D market. For example, the IIMCB offers comprehensive structural analysis of proteins and complexes of drug prototypes with therapeutic targets. Models of human diseases from preclinical studies are also created.
Currently, the IIMCB operates seven 7 core facilities:
- Biophysics and Bioanalytics Facility
- Genome Engineering Facility
- Microscopy Facility
- Zebrafish Facility
- Preclinical Drug Development Facility
- Rodent Facility
- Bioinformatics Facility
The recent acquisition of funds will enable a substantial modernization of the existing facilities and an expansion of the range of services offered.
A New Quality in Biotechnology
The funding will also allow for the creation of new facilities in order to address current challenges in biology, biotechnology, and biomedical sciences. These will include:
- Mass Spectrometry Facility
- Cellular Models and Organoids Facility
- Genomics Facility
In conclusion, the Institute will operate 10 core facilities, which will provide world-class competencies in biomedical technologies. The facilities will provide support not only to the research and development market but also to the current research laboratories of the IIMCB in implementing projects in basic research. Furthermore, the project encompasses the provision of highly specialized technical training for research staff and service facility personnel, in addition to technology transfer and intellectual property management.
"We are confident that the further development of research and development in molecular, cellular, and medical biology, made possible by investment in the molecular and cell research infrastructure, will have a significant long-term impact on the Polish pharmaceutical industry and enhance its competitiveness and innovation," says the project coordinator from the IIMCB, Prof. Andrzej Dziembowski.
The "Molecular and Cell Research Infrastructure" project of the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology in Warsaw (IIMCB) is among the ten awarded initiatives. The total funding under the National Recovery Plan amounts to over PLN 644 million, with the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology in Warsaw receiving PLN 71,755,978 (EUR 16 755 738) under the program.
